Stockings have a long history of friendly appeal. They had been worn by men and women for hundreds of years and were primarily made out of silk. It wasn’t until 1939 that DuPont developed the nylon stocking that we are familiar with today. Although they are quite different from the pantyhose and tights that are standard today, they competed directly with silk. The new material was wonderful as it was much lighter and comfortable for women to wear. The designs and styles have evolved since and will probably continue to be included in a woman’s collection of lingerie.
